A Korean BL Movie not so BL!

Updated: Apr 14, 2022

"Method" (2017)

In my opinion,"Method" along with "Call me by your name", "Brokeback Mountain", "Your name engraved herein" and a couple of other similar films, do not belong in the genuine BL category. However, since the story is about the relationship between the two main male characters, I decided to include it here.

The plot is about the strange bond which develops between the well known mature actor Jae-Ha (Park Sung-Woong) and the famous KPop idol Young-Woo (Oh Seung-Hoon). These two opposite personalities are called to be the leading actors in a gay themed stage play called "Unchain". From the first day of casting, the tension we witness is perceived as Jae-Ha's obsession for perfection and his annoyance with Young Woo's indifferent behaviour. However, as the two actors immerse into their roles, they begin to experience awkward unknown feelings that drive them to the edge. It's a great surprise the fact that it doesn't take long for them to realize and accept their mutual attraction. Without hesitation and with no remorse, they embrace their desire for each other without even questioning the source of these sentiments. The end comes to justify the title and although it leaves a bitter taste we come to realize that it was the only ending that fitted this drama.

It is a very good movie with well known actors who give a unique depth to their characters and made me want to go back and watch again and again their outstanding acting. With no provoking scenes or shocking content, this drama has a mature quality with very realistic elements. One of the best korean productions. Although, there is a huge trend in korean series lately, I personally believe that korean movies have a lot more to offer!!
